Garage warehouse collapses in Olhão

rainHigh winds and torrential periods of rain have been blamed for the collapse of a car park warehouse roof in Olhão.

Roofing materials landed on and damaged 28 vehicles parked securely below.

The garage is temporary home to vehicles that owners want to keep out of the weather, and a semi-permanent home for cars that owners do not want to park in the city’s narrow streets.

Owners of a high value or historic vehicle use one of the city's car park warehouses and expect their vehicle to be secure, safe and sound.

Nobody was injured when the roof collapsed at around 09:30 this morning into an area housing 40 vehicles.

The incident was well attended by eight emergency vehicles and crew from Olhão bombeiros, along with officers from the city’s PSP and GNR stations as not much else was going on today.

The commander of the local bombeiros said that the cause of the collapse was not easy to determine straight away but said "the wind and rain will not have helped."

The building has been closed as a precaution and as the property is private, it is up to the owner to carry out any remedial work and to check his insurance cover before the old ulcer kicks off again.
