Another fatal accident on the Algarve's 'road of death'

inemFour people died on Portugal’s roads last weekend with the authorities detaining 189 drivers in a nationwide operation over the ‘Day of the Dead’ weekend.

At 575, there were 12 more accidents than in 2014, with 130 of the 189 drivers detained being found over the drink-drive limit.

The death rate was down by three compared to 2014’s Halloween weekend but no comfort to the relatives of the woman mown down while crossing the EN125 near the Algarve Shopping centre at Guia.

The elderly pedestrian tried to reach her lift on the other side of the busy road but was struck down after dark on Saturday evening.

The rescue teams arrived at 19:45 but they were unable to save the life and she died at the scene of the accident.
