The Portuguese team of Sporting Braga were left barefoot in their changing room after thieves stole all their boots.
The team was preparing for their Europa League match at Olympique Marseille. They had left their boots in the dressing room at Stade Velodrome stadium after their training session on Wednesday.
On Thursday all 46 pairs had vanished.
Marseille had to rapidly buy new boots and also offered to charter a flight to Portugal to fetch new boots. Some of the team were able to use reserve boots they had brought with them but others had to don the new boots.
"There is nothing which allows us to contradict the Portuguese officials' version of events," a police spokesman said Friday.
The match went ahead but Portugal was not able to use their boots to score a single goal. The final score was 1-0.
"I find this incredible. No door had been forced, how did the boots disappear?" said Braga's president Antonio Salvador Rodrigues on Thursday.
Braga has lodged an official complaint with the French police, who said an investigation is ongoing.
