Irish tourist drowns near Albufeira Marina

beachpenecoalbufeiraAn afternoon dip turned into tragedy as an Irish tourist died on Saturday at Peneco beach near Albufeira Marina.

According to eyewitnesses the man had gone for a swim and later was spotted floating in the water.

Authorities received an alert at 15:43, the man was removed from the water and resuscitation attempts were made by paramedics.

According to a report from the Captain of the Port of Portimão, Santos Pereira, the 69-year-old had entered the sea alone and was declared dead on the quayside of Albufeira Marina where his body was taken after being plucked from the sea.

The beach has no lifeguard service at this time of year despite many bathers taking advantage of temperatures in the mid-70s.

A post-mortem was due to take place on Monday morning to determine if the drowning was due to a health problem.
