Expat drowns off Albandeira beach, Lagoa

beachalbandeiraFollowing the drowning last Saturday afternoon of an Irish tourist in the sea off Peneco beach in Albufeira, a Portuguese national, resident in Holland, drowned in the sea off the idyllic Albandeira beach in the Lagoa area.

The 37-year-old man and a group of his friends were hit by a huge wave on Sunday afternoon. The wave was estimated by survivors as being 3 metres high.

As the others clambered back to the shore, the Portuguese man was missing and later was found by rescue services, lifeless in the water, about 50 metres from the shore.

The Captain of the Port of Portimão, commander Santos Pereira, said that the Marine Police, the fire service, the ambulance service and the shipwreck emergency service all rushed to the scene but could not save the man. Conditions were poor with a rising wind and waves to 3 metres.

As at Peneco beach, Albandeira is not supervised at this time of year as the extended holiday season ended in the middle of last month so no lifeguards are on duty.

In Sagres, a local fisherman fell to his death from the rocky coastline. The 48-year-old Portuguese man fell from his fishing spot onto the rocks below and was swept out to sea.

A helicopter was scrambled but his body has not yet been recovered.
