Construction sectors fails to rally

buildingsiteDemand for building work in Portugal has not been sufficient to re-energise the construction sector which appears to be in serious decline.

For the month of September, construction work fell by 2.2% compared to August this year. This was the second largest drop of any eurozone country except Slovenia.

Portugal also fared poorly when considering annual rates. In September this year the rate was 3.2% lower than it had been in September 2014. Again, only Slovenia suffered a greater annual decline.

The lack of performance was against a backdrop of a euro region drop of just 0.4% annually.

According to Eurostat, building construction tailed off slightly during September while civil engineering works increased.
