Sócrates faces €19 million tax demand

socratesThe head of the Tax Authority has proposed to the public prsecutor that José Sócrates should be sent a rather unwelcome tax demand for undeclared income between 2010 and 2011.

According to Paulo Silva, the coordinator of the Finanças team looking in to the ex-prime minister’s expenditure, Sócrates faces a tax demand of €19 million and normally would need to pay it before entering into any negotiation.

The head of Operation Marquês argues that José Sócrates is the "real final beneficiary" of the €23 million that was deposited in his friend Carlos Santos Silva’s Swiss account.

Silva also argues that the lifestyle of the former PM did not match up with his declared earnings.

The taxman reckons that Sócrates had €1 million which was not declared in 2010 and a further €22 million not declared in 2011.

José Sócrates is suspected of corruption, money laundering and tax fraud under the operation Marquês.

The tax man is on to José Sócrates and proposes to prosecute him for hiding his income between 2010 and 2011.
