British bucket list puts Northern Lights on top

northernlightsOther top destinations for British travellers include the pyramids in Egypt, the Great Wall of China, and a road trip along Route 66 in the US.

The findings come from research done by TravelSupermarket, an online comparison website.

Also revealed by the survey was the fact that more than half the nation (54%) has compiled a list of top places to see. People are now hanging back in creating their ‘Bucket List’ – the average age for having compiled one is 32, giving people good time to fulfil their dream.

Interest in seeing the aurora borealis has grown over the past several years. Photo images to be found on online newspapers have shown the extraordinary displays of greens, yellows and reds that are involved.

It is one of several top wish list destinations that are relatively close to the UK. The lights have sometimes been seen from as far south as Scotland’s Isle of Mull, although the best sightings are closer to the Arctic Circle.

Displays of the lights are governed by an 11-year cycle and according to Nasa scientists, this month we are due to hit the top of the cycle – a “solar maximum”.  Some displays have been known to last for several hours and have filled the skies.
