Bales of quality hashish washed up in western Algarve

hash2Several large bales of hashish have washing up along the Algarve coast between Lagos and Sagres.

The first bale appeared on Tuesday at Meia Praia, the next day at Praia da Pinhão and on Thursday at Martinhal.

The Maritime Police say the four bales recovered so far contain a total 130 kilos of top quality hashish, have been in the water for a couple of weeks but that they are in good condition as they were wrapped in a sturdy waterproof outer.

The commander of Lagos port, Carvalho Pinto, reckons the bales have come from Morocco and were probably dropped during a fumbled switch in mid-ocean.

Police are keeping an eye on the coastline to see if any more bales wash up in the next week.

Pinto said there were no suspects as yet and that land and sea searches will continue over the next few days involving the Maritime Police whose drug free officers will ensure that nobody is able to recover an early Christmas present from the beach.
