An aeroplane owned by the Peruvian airline LAN made an emergency landing in Faro on Thursday at around noon after its captain had contacted air traffic control to report a total engine failure.
Luckily the Boeing 763 has more than one engine and the flight carrying 244 passengers between the Peruvian capital Lima, and Madrid, landed without incident.
Faro airport emergency services were put on full alert as LA 2707 approached Portugal with everyone well trained in the special emergency plan for disastrous event as demonstrated in the full alert test last week which went smoothly.
The real alert saw units of the GNR and PSP police, ambulance service INEM, the Portuguese Red Cross, the Maritime Police and the lifeboat service all in position and ready to respond if the Peruvian aeroplane has crash-landed.
