Hoteliers make a meal of Mediterranean Diet

fruitThe Association of Hotels and Resorts in the Algarve (AHETA) has called on the “authorities responsible for promoting tourism in the Algarve to begin activities to take advantage of the new added value to regional gastronomy" following the classification of Portugal's Mediterranean Diet as a UNESCO intangible.

The association welcomes the classification of the Mediterranean Diet and congratulates "the organisers of the submission process, the council of Tavira, which led to the successful addition of the diet on the UNESCO list.”

The hoteliers’ association said “the UNESCO classification of the Mediterranean diet contributes to enhancing the competitive position of the Algarve in international tourism markets."

"Although the classification covers seven states with Mediterranean cultures, the fact that the whole process of preparing the application was achieved by Tavira council shows the clear added value of the Algarve region and to its tourism.”

"The Mediterranean diet began many centuries ago as a result of geography, climate, and flora and fauna typical of the Algarve region, giving our traditional food unique characteristics that differentiates it from other regions," added AHETA, "This award is certainly a matter of great pride for the Algarve and the whole country, including for those that directly or indirectly are involved in tourism in the Algarve region."
