First baby of the year - "congratulations, it's a girl"

babyThe first of baby of 2016 was born as the Lisbon fireworks lit up the night sky at exactly midnight.

Francisca entered this world at the Alfredo da Costa maternity hospital in Lisbon where attending nurses logged the birth at just seconds into the new year.

According to her mother, Carina Ferreira, the birth took place "when she heard the fireworks."

The baby girl was born naturally and weighs in at 3.68 kilos.

Mother and baby are in good health and not at all perturbed by the arrival of the SIC Noticias film crew this morning.

The first baby born in Portugal last year also was a girl, delivered at midnight +55 seconds in the Centro Materno Infantil in Oporto.

Poortugal needs more babies. Good work, keep it up.

Spare a moment to reflect that this girl has the strong possibility of growing up in a country where the current President of the Portuguese Republic Cavaco Silva is calling for the "Defence of Portugal's Political, Economic and Social model".

So bizarre and disconnected from the European Union's reality that it is highlighted on the front cover of today's Jornal de Noticias!
