The hopes of the Algarve’s hoteliers have been dashed as the expected flood of home grown tourists may be off target with 76% of those Portuguese interviewed said they will be staying at home over the Christmas period
Of these, 49% say they are staying at home as they are pretty much broke, and staying put will save what little money they have left.
The 10% that definitely are planning to go away over the holiday season aim to spend an average of €169 on the trip, excluding gifts and Christmas Eve drinks.
Those staying at home for economic reasons are predominantly from the middle class, with only 10% of Portugal’s financially robust upper class respondents saying they are staying at home due to a lack of cash.
The 25 - 44 years olds are the ones complaining the most about a lack of money but younger revellers, especially those from Lisbon and Oporto, intend to have a great time.
This ‘Purchase Intentions of the Portuguese for Christmas 2013’ was conducted in collaboration with Nielsen and surveyed 500 individuals in mainland Portugal.
