Portuguese stay at home this Christmas

4828The hopes of the Algarve’s hoteliers have been dashed as the expected flood of home grown tourists may be off target with 76% of those Portuguese interviewed said they will be staying at home over the Christmas period

Of these, 49% say they are staying at home as they are pretty much broke, and staying put will save what little money they have left.

The 10% that definitely are planning to go away over the holiday season aim to spend an average of €169 on the trip, excluding gifts and Christmas Eve drinks.

Those staying at home for economic reasons are predominantly from the middle class, with only 10% of Portugal’s financially robust upper class respondents saying they are staying at home due to a lack of cash.

The 25 - 44 years olds are the ones complaining the most about a lack of money but younger revellers, especially those from Lisbon and Oporto, intend to have a great time.

This ‘Purchase Intentions of the Portuguese for Christmas 2013’ was conducted in collaboration with Nielsen and surveyed 500 individuals in mainland Portugal.

What planet are these hoteliers on?

Have they not noticed that the Portuguese people are on their financial knees at the mercy of the Troika?
