Quarteira woman duped clients out of €300,000 in 'tax payments'

financasA woman in Quarteira has been arrested for fraud and the falsification of documents to dupe her customers into assuming that she had paid their taxes at Finanças.

The police arrested the woman who was in charge of an accountancy office in Quarteira.

The un-named woman has been charged with embezzlement, aggravated fraud and forging documents.

The 59-year-old has been falsifying Finanças receipts to show to her customers to make it look like the taxes they owed had been paid.

The money advanced to the accountancy service has been pocketed by the woman, an estimated €300,000 of it.

How this leaves her customers remains to be seen but as the Tax Authority has not been paid, the sums remain outstanding.

Should the woman have no assets, there will be nothing for her customers to seize through the courts and they will be in the unenviable position of having to pay their tax bills twice over.
