Ryanair has reduced its charges for ‘excess’ baggage.
Now the levy is £10 per kilo instead of the £20 it formerly demanded.
Despite taking the step to improve its steadily diminishing image, it described the move as “an early Christmas present” for passengers.
The new fee for excess luggage is similar to rival carriers, such as easyJet (up to £11), Bmi regional (£10) and Wizz Air (£9). Other airlines, such as Jet2.com, Flybe, and Thomson, charge rather more.
Flyers with Ryanair now can take a second “small” carry-on bag, such as a “small ladies handbag or small airport shopping bag”.
Other rescue moves include dropping the charge for re-issuing a boarding pass from £70 to £15.
Further changes come in next year. On January 5, the charge for checking luggage at the airport (rather than online) will fall from £60 to £30 per bag, and on February 1 fully allocated seating on all flights will be introduced.
