British banking has the highest number of big earners

ferrariThe number of British bankers being paid more than €1 million a year soared to almost 3,000 in 2014.

This was more than three times as many as the rest of the EU combined, according to the European Banking Authority (EBA).

The regulator’s data showed that the number of high earners across EU countries went up by 22% to 3,865 in 2014, with the majority of these working in investment banking.

The overall leap was pushed by a 40% increase to 2,926 high earners in the UK.

The year 2014 was when the EU bonus cap and new rules on banks reporting staff remuneration were implemented. The cap limits bonuses to 100% of salary, or 200% with shareholder approval.

By comparison, there were 242 people in Germany that earned more than €1m that year and 171 people in France. Numbers in all other countries remained largely the same.

The data revealed that 16 people at financial firms based in Britain were rewarded with more than €10m in 2014, with one earning €24m-€25m.

After the bonus cap came into effect, both the UK and France have implemented waivers. Hundreds of small firms in Britain, such as asset managers and brokers, have been excluded.
