Assisted suicide petition to be discussed in Portugal's parliament

assistedsuicideA public petition for the decriminalisation of assisted suicide is to be delivered to Parliament later this month for an open debate on whether to change the current laws.

The petition to enable those that wish to ‘die with dignity’ has more than eight thousand signature so has to be discussed by MPs.

The document will be delivered by hand on the 26th of April to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, according to João Semedo one of the proponents and former Left Bloc activist.

The movement to allow assisted suicide in Portugal includes politicians of various hues, doctors, scientists and artists as well as thousands of citizens. The former Justice Minister, Paula Teixeira da Cruz, is among those who have been pleased to let it be known that the law needs changing to offer some dignity in death.

When debating this will any Portuguese politician state the obvious - that far too often ordinary Portuguese and foreigners have had their lives, health and savings shattered by intentional criminality. Just as in Salazar's time - not just by actual criminals (often with Police assistance!) but also the Mafiosi crime families running the local, regional and national Government.

How many of these 'little people', seeing no light at the end of the tunnel - have then resorted to suicide?
