Alcohol is the root cause of 25% of crime in the Algarve

beerdrinkerThe Algarve's court prosecutors have listed various crimes committed in the Algarve during the first quarter of 2016, one in four was for drunk driving.

Second on the list was driving without a license, third was violence, fourth was theft and burglary and the fifth was disobeying an office of the law.

In total, these five types of crime represent half of all the offenses recorded in the Algarve.

As for the areas in which suspected crimes were registered, Faro council area accounted for 20%, Portimão 19%, Albufeira 15% and Loulé 15% but when it came to people actually being charged, Albufeira came in first with 23%.

During the first quarter the region’s courts processed about two thousand trial hearings with 700 judgements being handed out of which 19% were acquittals.

As Portugal does not collate racial type data these figures tell us nothing about the race of the person doing the crime. It might help expats to know that Racial Type A carry out most of crime X in their area. Racial Type B being more into crime Y.

The sort of detail that Police forces in more developed countries that keep racial profile data would use. But then with one on 3 Portuguese Police needing psychological counselling in Portugal you get a picture of just why the lawlessness is so prevalent. As often asked - are the over stressed Police those attempting to be Police Officers or the dishonest ones who have been reported by even dodgier ones?

I write as someone who has been repeatedly burgled so now rarely go out.

Perhaps when driverless cars arrive the police will have more time to address violence, theft and burglary.

Proves that 75% is maybe caused by soft drinks and tea!
