BA first to allow mobile use throughout flights

baBritish Airways is the first European airline to let customers use mobile phones and other gadgets throughout a flight.

Until now, passengers were allowed to use devices, such as mobile phones, iPods and e-readers, only when the aircraft entered its cruise phase, usually about 10,000ft.

Now those on board will be able to access them at any time, including taxiing, take-off and landing. The devices, however, have to be set to “flight mode”.

The change follows the ruling from the European Aviation Safety Agency which said smartphones and tablets could be used safely during take-off and landing.

Other carriers are expected to adopt the same policy.

The new regulations will give people an average of 30 minutes more to use their screens.
