The number of deaths and serious injuries suffered in accidents on the Algarve’s roads was lower for the period Jan 1st to the end of May 2016 than in the past two years.
The Jan 1st to May 31st figures show the number of accidents increased compared to the same periods in 2015 and 2014 but that deaths were down.
The latest figures from the National Road Safety Authority show that in the 3,608 road accidents recorded in the Algarve region Jan to May May 2016, nine people lost their lives and 56 suffered serious injuries.
In the same period in 2015 there were 2,873 accidents but 13 people died. In 2014 there were 3,268 accidents with 11 fatalities from Jan 1st to the end of May.
The 159 deaths on Portugal’s roads in the first five months of 2016 represents a reduction of 20% on the same period last year.
The Secretary of State for Internal Administration, Jorge Gomes, confirmed that the Algarve's EN125 is the worst road in the country with 66 deaths between 2010 and 2015 but the thought of freeing up the Via do Infante by removing the tolls system fills the government with fear as then it would have to reveal details of the concession contract and the payment needed to break it.
