Spain to put tighter control on women

spanishflagMoving the clock backwards, Spain is to reduce women’s ability to access abortions.

A more restrictive abortion law is to be introduced, the Spanish justice minister announced.

The new regulation will permit abortion in the case of rape or when there is a serious medical or physical risk to the mother. Unborn infants suffering from a deformity severe enough to endanger its life if born will also be allowed.

Girls under the age of 17 will again have to have their parents’ permission before an abortion can take place.

Current legislation permits abortion without restrictions until the 14th week.

The bill has yet to be approved by parliament.

Most opposition parties and women’s groups have come out strongly against the new restrictions from the country’s conservative government.
