Six Russian football fans have been arrested in Germany after attacking three Spanish tourists.
The incident occurred outside Cologne’s famous cathedral. Two Spanish tourists and their Spanish guide were attacked in an “extremely aggressive and brutal manner” on Thursday evening, according to German police.
The Spaniards were “beat and kicked” with one seriously wounded, the police said. No reason for the incident was released.
The Russian suspects, aged between 26 and 30 years, had broken their journey in Cologne as they made their way home from the European Championship in Marseille. They were due to fly to Moscow from the Cologne-Bonn airport.
Five were detained on the spot and the sixth was apprehended later at the airport. "And with that, we have them all," a police spokesman said when the last man was arrested.
Police said the men had with them “typical objects used by hooligans, including masks and gumshields”. It is believed they are likely to be part of an extremist group and had arrived in Marseille on 10 June when the games began.
Violence flared last Saturday between Russian and English fans. The German police said they will liaise with French colleagues over the detainees.
