Christmas Day transformed into online retail experience

johnlewisChristmas Day could attract millions of Brits online to grab a bargain in the sales.

In the way of prediction, Britons could spend an estimated £228million as stores either launch their sales early or slash their prices further.

Online shopping has already broken all previous records in December and the trend is expected to continue. Christmas Day last year was very busy with online shoppers and retail experts believe this year will break another record.

Christmas Eve and Boxing Day are also anticipated as heavy shopping days for those online.

Many retailers are starting their sales on Christmas rather than Boxing Day, with some beginning on Christmas Eve.

Harvey Nichols, Debenhams, House of Fraser will all start slashing prices online on Christmas Eve with John Lewis launching its sale at 5pm that day.

Argos and Amazon’s online sales start on Christmas Day.

Advances in technology have played a part in changing tradition. Online possibilities, coupled with social media, smartphones and tablets, are behind much of the change, transforming Christmas Day itself into a key shopping day.

John Lewis said half its website visits last Christmas were from mobile phones with a peak at 9pm while 920,000 people used their phones to access the site on Boxing Day.
