Game of Thrones puts Spain on the screen

gameofthronesFilming for the popular Game of Thrones television series is set to take advantage again of Spain’s rich heritage.

Season Seven of the fantasy will be shot in a number of locations in Spain, according to HBO.

Broadcast is scheduled for the summer of 2017, a bit later than the traditional April start, and will consist of seven episodes rather than the usual ten.

Spain has already provided some of its allure to the programme makers. Its castles and cathedrals have featured as well as some of its medieval towns providing the visual basis for the fictional Game of Thrones kingdoms.

Andalusian locations were the backdrop for much of Season Five, while the next season used Zafra castle in central Spain, Girona in Catalonia, Santa Florentina castle near Barcelona and Pensicola Castle in Valencia.

Now for the penultimate season the producers are looking to Seville and Caceres and widening their perspective to the Moorish castle of Almodovar del Rio, near Cordoba and the ruins of the Roman city of Italica now in the city of Santiponce, north of Seville.

Season Six ended with the “Winter is Here” theme, so cast and crew will also be sent to Iceland to film on location to accommodate a much colder climate.

The popular series has boosted tourist numbers in Spain as fans determine to experience the actual locations .
