Anti-oil campaigners in summertime blitz

oilrigatseaLoulé council has given the anti-oil awareness campaign a boost by donating three huge billboards to Plataforma Algarve Livre de Petróleo (PALP) so the organisation can put up posters until the end of the summer.

"These public awareness materials will be placed in high visibility locations where thousands of vehicles go past each day, especially at this time of year.

“The Algarve is the favorite holiday destination for a large number of domestic and foreign tourists so billboards will be used at the EN125 to EN396 roundabout at Pereiras, just off the A22 at Boliqueime and at the roundabout at the entrance to Quarteira,” said Loulé council, run by Vítor Aleixo.

"Besides this being a contribution to inform the Portuguese and all those who visit the Algarve about the threat posed to the region from exploration and extraction of oil and gas, particularly in environmental and tourism terms, this initiative will cement Loulé council’s position in respect of a matter that is not only regional but of national interest."

On many of the Algarve's busiest beaches, members and volunteers from anti-oil and gas association ASMAA have been publicising the threat to the region's tourism economy, gathering signatures and sharing information, often in the face of stiff winds and burning heat.
