Algarve speeding drivers - watch out!

gnrstopPortugal’s forces of law and order have clocked a record 5 million vehicles this year to check which ones are speeding.

Most vehicles going past radars have been driven within the legal speed limit but 100,000 speeding tickets have been issued, to the cheery delight of the treasury.

According to the GNR, the ongoing TISPOL Speed Operation is now focusing on drivers exceeding the speed limit in urban areas.

The GNR has mobile and fixed speed control equipment and until Sunday will be especially active across the Algarve.

The GNR say that speeding is one of the main causes of road accidents that result in deaths and serious injuries in Portugal.

The Algarve does not do too badly when it comes to speeding drivers, coming thenth in the country with just 4,000 speeding tickets issued compared to Aveiro in first place with 13,722 cases, followed by Leiria with 12,264, Lisbon with 11,459 and Oporto with 9,440.
