A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle and died as he walked along the side of the EN 269 at Poço Frito, Silves last night.
Emergency services were called to the accident not far from Alcantarilha Gare, at the northern boundary of the Oceanico Amendoeira Golf Resort, but the 61 year old was dead.
GNR traffic officers are investigating the circumstances of the accident which happened at 23.00 in an unlit area. The victim was walking along the side of the road when he was hit and died instantly of severe impact injuries. The shocked driver stopped and called the police.
The ambulance service arrived to offer first aid but the man was confirmed as dead. Due to the violence of the collision the body was thrown several metres and parts became detached.
The local Bombeiros were summoned to "to locate all his body parts and to remove the body," explained Luis Simoes, commander of the Fire Department in Silves. The body and associated limbs were transported to Portimão Hospital for an autopsy.
The GNR breathalised the driver who was below the limit. The causes of the accident are now being investigated by the Center for Criminal Investigation of Traffic Accidents of the GNR but the reason for the collision is clear.
