Iraqis take their time over request to lift diplomatic immunity

iraqiBoysThe definition of ‘timely’ adopted by the Iraqi Embassy in Lisbon is trying the patience of the Portuguese authorities which are waiting for a decision on a request to lift the diplomatic immunity covering the twin sons of the Iraqi Ambassor.

The request was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the request of the Attorney General's Office.

In late August, the State prosecutor asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intercede and ask the Baghdad government whether it would lift the diplomatic immunity covering the two youngsters implicated in a savage attack on local boy Rúben Cavaco in Ponte de Sor, Alentejo on August 17th.

The waiver of immunity in needed so that State prosecutor can formally interview the twin boys as part of its investigation.

The Iraqi Embassy in Lisbon said that the Iraqi government is still considering the request but said that it would "respond in a timely manner."

Rúben Cavaco, aged 15, was assaulted in Ponte de Sor, allegedly by Haider and Ridha, the 17-year-old sons of Iraq's ambassador to Portugal, Saad Mohammed Ali.

Cavaco man suffered multiple fractures and ended up in the Hospital Santa Maria in Lisbon where he was put into an induced coma.

The two boys suspected of running over Cavaco in an embassy car and beating him senseless, have diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention.
