'oilgarve' October update

oilrigoilgarve - update Oct 2015

ASMAA - Algarve Surf and Marine Activities Association

Oct 19, 2015 — Dear friends

For the past two months the ASMAA team has been on a roller-coast ride, because of new information and events that has had a tremendous impact on our planning, on our resources and on our campaign.

So what has happened?

- 6 New oil and gas contracts have been signed in September
- The anti-oil and gas campaign now needs to cover the entire Algarve and Alentejo
- The fight now includes not only offshore but also onshore
- Threat of fracking now a real risk – Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Portimao and Tavira
- There’s new contracts / concession tenders waiting the wings

If you missed some of our workshops, you can get a summary of our latest presentation here and see how the proposed oil and gas exploration will affect you, your business, your investment and your quality of life in the Algarve:

Watch the Surfrider video because the information is pertinent and informative – and applies to the Algarve as well not just the USA.

WITH THE EXTENSION BY GOVERNMENT TO NEXT YEAR FOR FIRST PLATFORMS TO HIT THE WATERS OF THE ALGARVE – WE HAVE GAINED SOME ADDITIONAL TIME – BUT WE NOW HAVE TO ACCELERATE THE CAMPAIGN TO REACH AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE IN AN ATTEMPT TO STOP THE PLATFORMS HITTING THE WATERS OF OUR PRISTRINE OCEAN.

People across the Algarve and across Europe are being informed and are taking action. Now it is your turn to stand with us in this fight.

Why is it, despite the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) WR5 report: https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar5/syr/. Stating urgent action is needed to avert catastrophic climate change. Meaning the remaining fossil fuels should remain in the ground. And investment in renewables, energy saving and mitigation. Governments seem intent in exterminating the human race. There is NO planet B.
There are always leaks and accidents, even in mature oil & gas fields, even in mature site like the North Sea. It will also be unlikely to bring any new jobs for Portuguese people. They will bring experienced oil & gas workers from elsewhere.
Where as investment in renewables and energy efficiency, could bring about new employment opportunities.
