'An anti-oil petition form to every Algarve household' - ASMAA appeals for funds as distribution begins

oilrig2"ASMAA needs the help of algarvedailynews.com readers to fund the distribution of 150,000 petition forms into homes across the region."

This appeal from the Algarve's independent anti-oil and gas environmental group heralds the launch of a regional distribution of petition forms and information flyers which will be delivered to every Algarve household over the next few weeks.

ASMAA's leader, Laurinda Seabra, commented,

"It has been a real challenge to deliver petition forms, using our network of volunteers, to local homes. We just do not have enough feet to do it so we had to look for an alternative solution.

"We were left with two options, taking one or more double page spreads in major newspapers or printing the petition forms and info flyers and have them distributed using the postal service to every home in the Algarve.

"After an evaluation of costs, it was decided that the postal service is the route to follow."

The distribution campaign is taking place this month, May, and Seabra said she needs to raise a minimum of €6,000 to cover the costs of leaflet printing and distribution.

This will be the only way that many in the region can register their views on oil and gas exploration in and off the Algarve. The government isn't going to ask and the local mayors now are dithering over their legal action to stop onshore drilling.

"Please be generous and donate what you can to make sure that we can get one petition form into each household in the Algarve,"

said Seabra, an activist whose background in the oil industry and dedication to the campaign to stop oil companies drilling in the Algarve's on and offshore areas has made her into the region's most effective anti-oil and gas campaigner.

With concession holder Portfuel's clandestine drilling activities already spotted in the western Algarve, and no doubt with more such attempts still to come, the leaflets and petition forms will show the government whether or not the region's residents want or do not want a local oil or gas business with the Algarve carrying the full environmental risk for zero payback.

Gladly, Ed, and thanks to you all.
Personally, I find an on-line card transaction is easiest.
