Algarve mayors incensed by demolition man's plan for yet more coastal destruction

beachThe Algarve’s council chiefs are appalled at changes to the Odeceixe to Vilamoura coastal plan recently presented as a fait accompli by Sebastião Teixeira, the reviled president of the Algarve Environmental Agency.

The mayors, under the unifying banner of their association, AMAL, have accused the Environment Agency of simply ignoring their contributions to the coastal plan.

Sheila Grollman, who was aged 72, is thought to have gone for a dip on Thursday evening and likely suffered a heart attack.

Algarve opera season starts with success

Volunteer fireman arrested for starting 16 forest fires

bombeirosBringing shame to the uniform, a former volunteer firefighter of fourteen years standing has been arrested and charged with starting 16 fires in Proença-a-Nova in the Castelo Branco region.

The 46-year-old was arrested by the Judicial Police who said the man is implicated in the deliberate setting of multiple forest fires between July and September this year.

Misericordia plan to house Roma families in Ferrarias comes under heavy fire

gypsiesA public meeting at the parish council of Ferrarias, Silves, on Thurday evening had to be moved to the nearby and larger football ground hall as so many people turned up to protest at plans to house several Roma families on farm land which backs onto existing private properties.

The plan promoted to the parish council by Portugal’s Misericordia charitable institution is to assemble nine prefabricated houses with concrete foundations for 39 individuals on farm land near the point where the N269 passes over the IC1 by Malhada Velha.
