Most Europeans endorse ban on glyphosate

monsantoTwo-thirds of people in Europe are in favour of prohibiting the chemical herbicide glyphosate, the most widely used agricultural chemical in the world’s history.

More than 9 million tonnes of glyphosate have been used on crops since 1974, but the product is capable of killing all plants, algae, beneficial bacteria and fungi in the vicinity of the crop, affecting biodiversity.

Portugal can take 9,000 refugees to ease pressure on Greek camps

refugeespenelaPortugal can accommodate another 5,000 refugees, in addition to the 4,000 already allocated by the European Union and can take 1,250 right away.

The guarantee was made by Portugal’s Prime Minister on a visit to a refugee camp in Greece.

Algarve's IKEA shopping centre is given a name

ikea2The Algarve’s IKEA shopping center has been given a name -  'MAR Shopping Algarve' is announced.

Stage one of the enormous development will open next spring with an Ikea store as the main offering. Designer Outlet Algarve is scheduled to open in the summer of 2017 with other retail space to be added in later stages.

Banks’ transgressions rack up £53bn

lloydsMisconduct by banks and building societies in Britain has cost £53bn in fines, compensation and legal fees over the last 15 years.

The highest penalties accrued to Lloyds which had to put aside £14bn for its misconduct between 2010 and 2014 while at the same time paying £2.1bn in bonuses. The taxpayer still owns about 9% of Lloyds Banking Group.

Algarve wants more cyclists but many routes are not safe

cyclingAlgarve Tourism and the region’s councils are keen to attract cyclists, especially in the low season, but there are still security concerns about the roads, according to a warning issued today by the Portuguese Federation of Cyclists.

According to data provided by the GNR, two bicyclists have been killed in the last six months, both on the EN125. One died on a section of road between Faro and Olhã just two weeks ago adding to a total of 20 serious road accidents involving cyclists in the past year.

Overseas BES depositors threaten 'less than peaceful protests' in Paris

besThe Association formed by those outside Portugal who in 2014 were fiddled out of their deposits by BES management, is to meet the President of Portugal this week alongside representatives from the Stock Market regulator and Socialist and Left Bloc MPs to discuss their loss and who is going to pay up.

Lawyer António Pereira de Almeida is representing around 2,000 BES customers who were "deceived by the bank as they wanted their savings in timed deposits with capital and interest guaranteed, but managers at BES switched their money into complex financial products" to prop up the crumbling financial empire presided over by Ricardo Salgado.

DECO demands an end to condo fee loophole

apartmentsPortugal’s consumer association, DECO, has demanded legislative changes covering condominium sales so that unwary buyers are not left nursing someone else’s debt.

In a simple move, DECO wants condominium sales documentation to include a statement from the condo administrator that there are no overdue condominium fees. Currently, buyers become responsible for overdue condo fees which in some cases have added thousands to the cost of buying.

Álvaro Viegas, the newly elected president of the Trade and Services Association of the Algarve Region (ACRAL) has plans for the old title as part of his list of projects that the wants to achieve before 2020.
