A reader writes, "I am writing to share a deeply emotional and troubling incident that occurred on January 17th, 2025, in Aljezur. A stork's nest, along with the platform that supported it, was removed, leaving the storks that have called this place home for years without their cherished nesting spot.
This pair of storks has returned to this very location every year to overwinter and raise their young, a beautiful ritual we’ve been fortunate to witness.
We were heartbroken to see this happen. Watching the removal of the nest was devastating enough, but later that evening, seeing one of the storks perched helplessly on the remains of the pole, where their home once stood, was almost unbearable. The poor bird, with no safe place to rest, spent the night on the pole. It was a sight that touched us deeply, and left us questioning how such an act could be allowed?"
"While we understand that some residents living directly under the nest may have raised concerns or complaints, the removal of these nests is illegal. Storks are a protected species, and their nests are safeguarded by law. Intervening in their habitat without proper authorization is a clear violation of these protections.
I have reached out to the local Câmara Municipal to request documentation proving whether any authorization was granted for this action. Until now, I have not received confirmation, and I am left deeply concerned about the legality of what has happened.
This incident is not just about a nest, but about the disruption of a natural cycle and the displacement of a species that has coexisted peacefully with the community for years. I am reaching out to ask for help in bringing attention to this heartbreaking story. Raising awareness can hold those responsible accountable and help ensure that such acts are not repeated in the future.
The photo's document the situation before and after the nest's removal, including the stork's heartbreaking attempt to stay near its lost home.
Please, help give these magnificent creatures the voice they deserve and advocate for their protection.
