Growing Concerns Over Safety and Decline in Vilamoura

Growing Concerns Over Safety and Decline in VilamouraI am writing as a regular visitor to Vilamoura, a destination I have returned to over twenty years and one I have always regarded as one of the Algarve’s premier destinations for many.

However, following a recent visit last weekend, I feel compelled to raise serious concerns about what appears to be a noticeable decline in both the atmosphere and sense of safety — particularly around Vilamoura Marina.

During a single evening, I was approached on three separate occasions by different individuals offering drugs. What was particularly alarming was not just the frequency, but the apparent organisation behind it. These individuals seemed to operate in a coordinated manner — referencing substances hidden in wall crevices near cash machines, or associates quickly retrieving items when a purchase was agreed.

This did not feel like isolated incidents, but rather a structured and persistent operation taking place openly in a key tourist area.

For a destination that attracts families, couples, and international visitors, this type of activity is deeply concerning. It undermines Vilamoura’s reputation as a safe, high-quality resort and risks deterring visitors who expect a relaxed and secure environment.

It raises the question as to why more visible preventative measures are not being implemented. The installation of CCTV in known hotspot areas — particularly around ATM locations — would act as both a deterrent and an enforcement tool. Increased presence from (GNR), alongside action from the local mayor’s office, would also send a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated.

Vilamoura has long been one of the standout destinations in the Algarve. It would be a great shame to see its reputation eroded by avoidable issues that could be addressed through more proactive management and enforcement.

I hope this letter encourages discussion and, more importantly, action — so that Vilamoura can return to the safe and welcoming destination it once was.
Surely a petition in a newspaper and online may make officials actually do something, as with the new Bar / Restaurant opening soon, I fear the worst.
