Year 1 student, Yuri Maia, won third place in Tiny Tots at the ALOHA National Calculus Championships on 3rd June at the Artistic School of the Music Conservatory of Coimbra. The six-year-old student was the third fastest to complete the challenge of 70 mathematical operations in five minutes.
The competition, which was attended by students from all districts of mainland Portugal and the Islands, aged between 4 and 13 years, aimed to find the fastest students to do mental calculations accurately. Besides the Tiny Tots (from 5 to 6 years old), the National ALOHA Calculation Championship also included Kinder and Kids from 4 to 5 and 8 to 13 years old, respectively.
The ALOHA program aims to teach children to do mental calculations with high speed and precision. This makes mathematics fun and challenging and enhances children's cognitive development through the use and visualization of the abacus.
