The World Championships Shore Angling for under 16's and under 21's has started today, with Lourenço Martins from Burgau representing Portugal in the under 16's category.
Sponsored by the Portuguese Fishing Federation, the event is being held in La Tremblade, France from 23rd until 30th April.
The youth of today try so hard but don’t get much backing, but the championship is sponsored by the Portuguese Fishing Federation. It holds various competitions all over the country throughout the fishing season.
These competitions then lead them to invite the top anglers to attend world competitions, such as the one held in Subaudia, Italy in 2019.
The anglers have to be in the top 5 of the country from the various challenges and competitions that were held. It is a huge honour to be chosen.
This competition is for Shore Angling and will be held on different beaches around and near La Tremblade, France,
Both teams, the under 16’s and the under 21’s will attend an opening ceremony where local dignitaries and representations from Fishing Federation are invited.
Lourenço Martins aged 15, from Burgau and part of the Clube Naval Portimão team, represented Portugal in the 2019 championships too, and was recently awarded a National Championship medal.
Clube Naval, Portimão also have a second person, Miguel, going to the championship, as runner up.
Lourenço says, "I love the sea and fishing, and is always getting youngsters involved in the sport. It is a huge honour for me to represent my country."
