Almancil - Chic Town in the Golden Triangle

Almancil ChurchDid you know? Karting Almancil is home to the replica of the former Formula 1 Jacarepaguá circuit in Brazil. The Almancil circuit was launched by former Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna, who won three Formula One world championships.
Visitors can take either a 200cc kart around the 760 meter racetrack or, for the more experienced drivers, there are high performance 390cc karts to take for a spin.

Stroll around Almancil and you’ll spot many reminders of the town’s history. The pottery industry is part of Almancil’s heritage and the locally-produced pieces are particularly attractive with their muted pastel colours. The Church of São Lourenço, on the eastern edge of Almancil, is one of the few Algarvean churches to have survived the 1755 earthquake intact and is a wonderful example of a traditional Portuguese place of worship. The interior of the church is a fascinating work of blue and white azulejos(ceramic glazed tiles) depicting the life of São Lourenço.

Modernity
A variety of shops and businesses line the main road through the town with several banks, supermarkets, restaurants and cafes. Not surprisingly, Almancil has developed a sizable expat community and a number of stores are geared up to meet its needs. There is an English butcher, a fish and chip shop and the popular Apolónia supermarket, which has everything you could possibly want including UK brand products.

A short drive to the Golden Triangle coast will take you to Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, both purpose-built luxury resorts. Complete with a selection of restaurants, designer shops and excellent sports facilities, they cater for those seeking luxury and the chance to splurge.

Sport and leisure
Living in Almancil gives you a choice of world-class golf courses. Vale do Lobo is home to the Royal and Ocean courses and Quinta do Lago has three, the North, South and Laranjal, as well as the exclusive Pinheiros Altos and San Lorenzo. Each course has its own individual setting and challenges.

In Almancil, you're also close to one of Portugal’s largest tennis facilities, Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy. Nearby Vilamoura boasts another internationally recognised tennis academy, but if you prefer to spend your leisure time relaxing, then a visit to Vilamoura’s 1000+ berth marina complex for a lazy lunch or romantic supper is a must.

Of course, there's always plenty to do and see down at the beach. Just six kilometres from Almancil, you’ll be hard pressed to find better stretches of golden sand flanked by bold ochre and ruby cliffs. The coast is a paradise for water sports and fishing enthusiasts.

Just seven kilometres north of Almancil, the town of Loulé has plenty to offer too. Famous for its Gypsy Market and annual Brazilian-style carnival, Loulé has its own sports pavilion and swimming pools. The swimming pool complex boasts a 50 metre Olympic outdoor pool and a 25 metre indoor pool, which is open all year round.
