The Magic of the Algarve West Coast

The Magic of the Algarve West CoastEvery time I visit the west coast of the Algarve, I feel an indescribable joy. Recently I was asked to plan a hike from Sagres to Arrifana, with three nights. A fantastic opportunity to rediscover my favorite places!

My adventure began in Sagres , the most south-westerly point of Europe. As soon as I arrived, I discovered that the lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente is unfortunately closed until the end of the year. Too bad, but it is no reason not to go! The lighthouse is normally a major attraction. With its light shining up to 60 kilometers away, it helps ships navigate the dangerous waters around the cape safely. It is an impressive place that many visitors come to, and the view from the cape remains breathtaking.

Even without visiting the lighthouse, there is still plenty to see in Sagres. I started my day with a visit to the iconic cliffs of Costa Vicentina . This area is a protected natural park, famous for its pristine beaches and spectacular cliffs. The view of the wild Atlantic Ocean and the endless horizon always gives me a feeling of freedom. Around the lighthouse you will find cozy stalls and food trucks where you can get a warm cup of tea. After a visit to my favorite pottery shop – a regular stop for me – I was fully recharged for the rest of my trip.

From Sagres I continued my way to Vila do Bispo. This small village stole my heart. Here you can still eat delicious food for next to nothing, and the local products are always of top quality. In the middle of the village, near the church, the famous Fishermen's Trail is well signposted. My task was to explore the route and find hidden gems. The friendly locals make every stop a party, and their smile is infectious.

Fishermen's Trail

The Magic of the Algarve West CoastThe Fishermen's Trail is a beautiful walking route along the rugged west coast of the Algarve and Alentejo, part of the Rota Vicentina. The route follows the paths used by local fishermen and offers spectacular views of cliffs, pristine beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. With a total length of approximately 226 kilometres, it is a popular trail for nature lovers and hikers, and can be done in several stages. It is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt coastal walks in Portugal.

My next stop was Praia do Amado , a surfers paradise. As soon as you arrive, it feels like you’ve entered a surfers’ ski village, complete with a relaxed atmosphere and surfboards everywhere you look. The waves here are perfect for the hardcore surfers, but it’s also a great place to be for non-surfers. With cozy bars and spectacular views from the cliffs, this is a great place to relax.

After Praia do Amado I continued my way to Carrapateira , a small village where I always have the feeling that time stands still. The conversations with the locals are always friendly and warm. The charm of Carrapateira is in the simplicity and the beautiful nature that surrounds the village.

My adventure ended in Arrifana , a place that never disappoints me. Even though I have been there many times before, the view of the steep cliffs and the wild sea never ceases to enchant me. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, the fresh sea air and the tranquility that this place exudes, make it a perfect end to my journey.

My hike from Sagres to Arrifana gave me the chance to not only rediscover my favorite places, but also to find new treasures. It is an experience I recommend to everyone. What will be your favorite place?

Lots of love,
Jennifer
