Rotary Sponsors Summer Camp

Rotary Sponsors Summer CampDuring a very warm week in August, AAMA (Adapted Motor Activity Association) held its first ever summer camp in the Algarve. Primarily funded by the Rotarian’s Wine Appreciation Fellowship (RWAF), the association was able to provide a day camp to benefit and support the families in the Algarve with special needs children. AAMA is very active in the Lisbon area and is making an effort to expand its area of activities.

Based at school E. B. 2, 3 in Silves, a full agenda was scheduled for each of 5 days. Activities included basketball, football, swimming, traditional games and dance and drama. There were excursions to Krazy World and to the beach at Armação de Pêra. The therapeutic activities were structured so that each child with disabilities had a trained and experienced monitor to direct his/her rehabilitation activities.

As an introductory programme, numbers were limited to 6 children, 7 monitors and 2 coordinators. The children attending have been diagnosed either with cerebral palsy or autism.

RWAF organises fundraising activities periodically to benefit various charities. In this instance, when the parents of 2 children were unable to pay the registration fee, Rotary E-club Porches International paid the children’s costs, thus increasing the participation of Rotary.
