The final fundraising activity for Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) for the Rotary year 2013/2014 was a summer BBQ held at the home of AIRC member Uschi Kuhn on Sunday 22nd June. It nearly wasn’t summer since it rained in the morning but the sun came out at 1:00pm and from then on it was a glorious afternoon.
‘Chefs’ José Galamba and Martin Temple ensured there was a steady supply of sausages and meats, whilst Uschi’s friends provided a selection of mouth-watering salads. Victor Cazes was in charge of drinks and did a fantastic job.
Music was provided by trio Ronny and raffle prizes were kindly donated by Judy and Roger Lewis of Zonda/House-2-House and by the Angels Theatre Group.
A total of €830 was raised and this will be used to send 4 Portuguese students to the Rotary summer camp in Manchester.
The summer camps have proved hugely successful and to date more than 14 students sponsored by AIRC have attended. The camp brings together students from all over Europe to improve their English language skills and to learn of each other’s cultures.
Students sponsored by AIRC are charged with reporting back at a future Rotary meeting. “Their stories are always interesting and fun” said Rotary President Dr Raymond Parfait. “These students would ordinarily not have the opportunity to go abroad. As a result of meeting students of other nationalities, strong friendships are formed and the students often stay in touch and even visit each other from time to time. We hope to continue the practice for many years to come”.
