A new book by author Lena Strang, The Heart of Portugal – Portraits of the Algarve and Beyond, will be officially launched on Saturday, 29 November at 15:00, at the Fortaleza da Luz in Praia da Luz.
Lena Strang, one of the earliest writers for Tomorrow magazine, is renowned for her insightful interviews and articles about life in the Algarve. Her fascination with the region’s history — especially the stories hidden within its landscapes and historic buildings — inspired her first two books, Touching Lives and Crossing Cultures in the Western Algarve.
In The Heart of Portugal, Lena broadens her perspective by blending personal anecdotes with wider reflections on Portugal’s rich heritage. The book honours the resilience and devotion of those whose work and passions shape their communities — including firefighters who risk their lives to protect others, a fisherman working to preserve traditional practices, and a couple lovingly restoring abandoned buildings in the centre of a city.
Many of these inspiring individuals will be attending the launch, offering guests the chance to meet them face-to-face.
Available in English and Portuguese, The Heart of Portugal costs €10 and features over 100 colour photographs. Signed copies are available for purchase at the event.
The Fortaleza da Luz, a historic landmark overlooking the coast, provides a suitable venue for the launch. Refreshments will be available at the bar in the annexe, with meals if desired, in the main restaurant.
Everyone is welcome to join. With the festive season drawing near, the event provides a perfect chance to find a special gift!
