Plus, join us for a fascinating history talk on the Pepper Wreck at the Municipal Libraries in Lagoa (16th December) and Tavira (19th December)
December Concert
Our December concert will take place on Sunday 14th at 16:00 at Quintinha da Música. We shall welcome three artists from the north of Portugal - António Hipólito (harpsichord), Inês Golegã (flute) and Bruno Carneiro (double bass), and each of them works at present in the Algarve. They will be playing works by, CPE Bach, JS Bach, François Devienne, Henry Eccles, Georg Friedrich Händel, Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Seixas. This wide-ranging programme draws works from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The different sounds which António can conjure from the harpsichord are intriguing and often sound similar to the piano – this harpsichord concert will be one to remember! Places at €30 may be reserved through Peter at peterbooker1347@gmail.com
December History Talk
Peter will present the story of the Pepper Wreck, when a fully laden East Indiaman was driven ashore and wrecked on the north bank of the River Tagus. In a storm in 1606, Nossa Senhora dos Mártires shed its cargo of pepper into the water of the river, and much of the pepper was gathered from the shore by eager pillagers. One of the largest ships of its era, Nossa Senhora dos Mártires also lost many her crew and passengers to drowning. The loss of this ship and its cargo illustrates the uncertain nature of the spice trade and is an example of the kind of loss which foreshadowed the failure of the Portuguese enterprise in the east. This event was reconstructed by pioneering nautical archaeological research in the years around the millenium. These talks will take place in the Municipal Library in Lagoa at 18:00 on Tuesday 16th December; and the Municipal Library in Tavira at 11:00 on Friday 19th December. Lynne and I arrange lunch after the Tavira talk at our usual restaurant – please let us know if you wish to join us through peterbooker1347@gmail.com
