What’s My Motivation to Be “On Stage”?

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now ChangeAs the cast of The Algarveans’ upcoming production of  I Love You, Youre Perfect, Now Change are perfecting harmonies and dialogue for their opening night at Lagoa’s Humorfest, we ask why they do this!?

Bearing in mind they have long rehearsal hours in a cold practice space, no celebrity status and certainly no pay!Wedding: Lara, Nicola, Tracey, Gloria, Alan and Alex

For Paul Legault, both director and musical director for the show, it’s a no brainer. ‘Because this is the perfect combination of music and theatre, and a joy to share with an audience.’

Angela Theobold is quite candid about her drive to act. ‘Because I’m a show-off! I’ve been performing since I was two. I love the lights, the glamour and applause.’

Tracey Christiansen disagrees that it’s glamorous. ‘In this show I play a geeky girl on a first date, a woman frantic to use the toilet and a bridesmaid in a hideous dress! Despite the lack of glamour, I love playing diverse roles.’

Alexander Melo acknowledges the lack of kudos and long hours but says, ‘The friendships, laughter and buzz of a live audience are priceless.

New member Tom Murphy agrees. ‘The feeling when you walk off stage with the audience applauding is like pulling off Oceans 11 with your mates!’

Newcomer to The Algarveans, Nicola Scicluna says, ‘What really matters is being part of a like-minded group, with great teamwork and real camaraderie.’

The unseen backstage crew couldn’t agree more. As Jenny Morris-Marks says, ‘Lifelong friendships are made with The Algarveans.
