Werk Room is a volunteer-run community space in central Faro offering a programme of cultural, social and wellbeing activities for the LGBTQIA+ community and the wider public.
Founded with the aim of creating a more inclusive and supportive environment, the centre provides a place for people to meet, participate, access support and build connections.
Located in the heart of Faro, less than five minutes’ walk from both the Love Faro sign and the city’s train station, Werk Room opened last year as a dedicated space for culture, wellbeing and community activity. The centre operates entirely with volunteers, and receives no state or private funding. Its continued success is largely the result of the time, commitment and energy of those people involved.
As Chris Seibold, one of the founders of the collective behind the project, puts it: “Without people, it’s just a building.” The physical space provides the setting, but it is the people and the activities taking place there that turn it into a community.
The Werk Room is a bright, spacious and thoughtfully decorated interior and the events programme is diverse.
Regular activities include social dinners, art exhibitions, film screenings, book presentations, poetry readings, yoga, meditation, sharing circles and karaoke. Activities are designed to encourage both social interaction and personal wellbeing, with events often bringing together people who may not otherwise have an opportunity to meet. There has even been a yoga session involving puppies, organised in cooperation with Animal Rescue Algarve.
A dedicated book-exchange library provides another informal way for visitors to use the space, while a separate room is available for private consultations. These include counselling and therapy sessions provided by the PAS Association. Unlike the centre’s social and cultural activities, these consultations require a small contribution.
Werk Room’s cultural programme is also an important part of its identity. The gallery area is dedicated to Guilherme Gonçalves, a local artist and friend of many of those involved with the centre, who passed away four years ago. Exhibitions provide an opportunity for local artists to present their work, while introducing visitors to different perspectives and forms of creative expression.
Exhibitions at Werk Room are curated by Vera Brandão, a volunteer who has become deeply involved in the centre and its programme. Local LGBTQIA+ artists interested in exhibiting their work are encouraged to contact her through Werk Room.
The centre's activities also connect with organisations working beyond Faro.
Xavier Diaz, another volunteer, was organising and hosting the CineClub during my visit and is also involved with Rede Ex Aequo, a national organisation supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex young people aged between 16 and 30. These connections help link Werk Room’s local community work with wider networks of LGBTQIA+ support.
At the heart of Werk Room is a broader understanding of what community support can mean. It is not simply about providing assistance when someone is experiencing a crisis. It is also about creating a place where people can spend time, meet others, participate in activities and feel comfortable being themselves. For Chris and the other volunteers, connection, shared experiences and social relationships are fundamental to that process.
This is particularly relevant in a region such as the Algarve. Faro has an abundance of cafés, restaurants, bars, cultural venues and sporting facilities, but dedicated spaces focused specifically on inclusion, community and wellbeing are less common. For LGBTQIA+ residents, younger people, newcomers and anyone experiencing social isolation, having somewhere that is explicitly welcoming and non-judgemental can make a significant difference.
Werk Room demonstrates how much can be achieved through a community-led initiative. Its importance lies not only in the events it organises, but in providing a permanent space where people can meet, express themselves, access support and develop connections with others.
Werk Room offers Faro something more than another cultural venue. It provides a community space built around inclusion, participation and mutual support — a place where people can simply walk through the door and feel welcome.
