Moncarapacho - Monterosa oilve oil wins top US award

olivesMoncarapacho's Monterosa extra virgin olive oil has won two gold medals at the New York International Olive Oil Competition on April 27th, the most prestigious category: one with the monovarietal Monterosa Picual and the other with Monterosa Selection.

At the start of the week, the Algarve brand won a gold medal with the Monterosa Picual monovarietal in the Japan Olive Oil Competition and two silver medals with the Monterosa Maçanilha monovarietal and the Monterosa Selection.

To win the prize at the New York International Olive Competition, the oil had to beat 910 submissions from 26 countries, while the Japan Olive Oil competition fielded 620 olive oils from 25 countries.

Also this week, "Monterosa Maçanilha" olive oil was selected, with four more national olive oils, to represent the best extra virgin olive oil in Portugal, at the International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Fair to be held at the XVIII edition of Expoliva In Jaén - Spain, in what is one of the most important olive oil fairs in the world.

Monterosa Extra Virgin Olive Oil coems from the 20 hectares of olive groves in Moncarapacho, planted in 2000.

The business continues to thrive, despite the owner of the business, Detlev von Rosen, killing himself last December at the age of 80.

In the late 60s, von Rosen moved to the Algarve, where he started the Viveiros Monterosa nursery, before starting to produce fine olive oils and founding a solid business that clearly is thriving.

The host of awards this year builds on a cabinet-full of silverware from previous years' international shows.
