An Irishman in his 30s has been hospitalised after he repeatedly was stabbed in Praia da Rocha early on Sunday morning.
The victim was set upon by two men in the main bar area and was left in a pool of blood.
Such were the extent of his injuries, the man was flown to the São José hospital in Lisbon after being stablisied at the hospital in Portimão. He has been operated on and remains in a serious condition.
On April 30th, local police arrested two men involved in knife-point robberies in Praia da Rocha and Sunday’s attack may have been a continuation of this type of street crime, or the result of a bar-room argument that spilled onto the street.
The police are treating the case as attempted murder.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs has told media that they are aware of the case and are "standing by to provide assistance if requested."
