Hangares, the tiny settlement on the Ria Formosa island of Culatra, is to mark the centenary of Portugal's actions during WWI with the unveiling a special monument.
The event aims to 'value the collective memory and celebrate the achievement of peace and democracy,' according to head of the Hangares residents’ association.
The event, scheduled for 11:00 am on August 30th, will be attended by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Silva Ribeiro, the Secretary of State for National Defense, Marcos Perestrelo, and the Mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau.
The signing of a collaboration between the Maritime Authority and the Navy, with the residents' association, aims to increase the accessibility for members of the public to what was a military supply base on the island. This means being able to use the jetty which always has been denied the islanders despite it being the only landing point.
"Our community also wants to point out the good relationship with these State bodies," the residents' association reported.
