Labour minister takes own life after 'sexual misconduct' suspension

LabMPCarlSargeantA Welsh Government minister has killed himself just days after his suspension by the Labour Party in Wales due to allegations of sexual misconduct.

Carl Sargeant, a husband and father of two, was found dead at his Connah's Quay home in North Wales. He had been suspended last Friday and was to be investigated after women voiced allegations of sexual misconduct.

Sargeant said that he found the allegations shocking and had wanted to clear his name, "I met with the first minister today and he informed me allegations had been made about my personal conduct, which was shocking and distressing to me.

"The details of the allegations have yet to be disclosed to me. I have written to the General Secretary of Welsh Labour requesting an urgent independent investigation into these allegations in order to allow me to clear my name."

A spokesman for North Wales Police said officers are not treating the death as suspicious and will provide updates, as and when.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described Sargeant’s death as "terrible and deeply shocking news."
