Millennium BCP Foundation funds art restoration in Faro's São Pedro Church

millenniumThe Millennium BCP Foundation has picked up the bill for the restoration of a unique altar painting in a Faro church.

After two months work by the specialist restoration company Junqueira 220, the painted canvas depicting the 'Boca de Cena' which frames the Altar of Nossa Senhora da Vitória in Faro’s São Pedro Church, is back on display.

The final result already has been praised by parishioners and visitors as the work was in a very poor state. Now the gap in the Altar has been refilled by the restored canvas, the magnificence of the C18th Rococo style ensemble can be appreciated.

The conservation project was shared between the São Pedro Church workshop, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the Millennium BCP Foundation with the aim of safeguarding, restoring and conserving of this piece of ecclesiastical art.

The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve defined the technical requirements and set the budget of €23,470.

It may be the Millennium BCP Foundation which has made the donation, but the bank itself will reap the benefit of the advertising. I bet the Bank´ s expenditure on the Foundation is accounted among its advertising costs.
“The Bank and the Foundation have different, albeit complementary, objectives. The Foundation, due to the nature of its activity, can and should have a bolder and more appealing image for the world of the arts and culture, thus reinforcing and broadening the prestige of the Millennium bcp brand.”
Fernando Nogueira, President of the Millennium bcp Foundation

So the bank contributes towards a cultural goal. While at the same time trying to flog off for development one of the last pieces of unspoiled Algarve coast; and increasing charges for its customers.

I should prefer a bank which tries to keep costs down for its customers. But we live in a world of cartels in both oil and banking………
I was tempted to draw a parallel between acts of generosity (such as this one in Faro) and the Bank's role as owner and desperater seller of the Salgados Praia Grande Eco-resort, but as one is a foundation and the other a commecial enterprise, I hesitated but am pleased to see this now on record.
