Parts of eastern Algarve blanketed by hailstones

The monumental thunderstorm that crashed through the Algarve on Sunday left parts of the Serra do Caldeirão covered in a white blanket of hailstones.
 
After a sunny Sunday morning, the skies darkened as torrents of rain, lightning and thunder were complimented by prolonged periods of hail.

 

In the east of the region, a car was washed away in Alcoutim, after a stream burst its banks and the heavy rain and hailstones caused some damage locally.
 
In the Serra do Caldeirão, between Barranco do Velho and Montes Novos, the scene was wintery, with a blanket of hailstones covering the countryside.

 

Alcoutim Civil Protection reported that, "abnormal levels of rainfall and hailstones were caused material damages in several localities with incidents at the Alcoutim River Beach and Aldeia do Pereiro and Vaqueiros."

 

Civil Protection warned traffic to beware standing water and debris washed onto rural roads.
